Michalakis Savva (also known as Michalakis Chatzikyriakou) graduated from Akaki primary school and worked as a blacksmith. He joined the Organization from the beginning of the struggle and distinguished himself for the manufacture of bombs of his own invention, the then known “cannon mines” and “Michalakis Savva” type grenades. For explosive material he used fertilizer, ammonia nitrate, mixed with sulfur and ground coal. He had two workshops for his constructions, one in Akaki and one in Avlona.
In October 1956, British soldiers took down the Greek flag from the bell tower of Akakiou church and tore it. Michalakis placed another in her place, drugging her. When the English soldiers tried to take it down again, an explosion occurred resulting in their deaths.
He also offered great services as a liaison. In his car (registration number B674), he transported wanted persons, weapons and Organization mail throughout the Morphou sector. The operations and ambushes in which he took part extended from Akaki to the area of the villages of Kontemenos and Myrtos. From February 1957, when EOKA fighters intensified their activities in his area, Michalakis Savva almost completely abandoned his work, devoting all his time to the execution of the Organization’s orders.
On March 10, 1957, Michalakis and his team attempted to blow up the great bridge of Serrahis. The rainy weather did not allow good firing and the operation was postponed. The next day, Michalakis noticed suspicious movement of the soldiers and traces of their guns in the river. He sent a fellow soldier to warn the sentries and signalmen to retreat, and he himself went to the bridge to check the mines, when English soldiers, who were waiting, shot and killed him.
