Panagiotis Chrysostomou
Timeline Events
Biography
Born in the village of Stylloi1, Famagusta district, in 1921.
Killed on October 3, 1958 in Famagusta2 by British soldiers, who tortured him.
Panagiotis Chrysostomou attended the primary school of Stylloi and lived in Famagusta. He was a shoemaker.
Arrested on October 3, 1958 by “security forces” as a member of EOKA. His arrest took place in his home, according to testimony from his wife, which she gave to the court during the inquest into the causes of his death.
“My husband was in good health,” she testified before the English coroner, who appeared in court on behalf of the Crown, “when English soldiers in red berets arrested him and began to beat him and lead him to a military car, on 3 October 1958.”
Two other Cypriots, who were arrested and abused along with Panagiotis Chrysostomou and others, also testified in court. They testified that they saw two soldiers trample Panagiotis and then one pull him by the arm and the other beat him until he fell unconscious to the camp, where they had been taken.
The government pathologist who performed the autopsy testified that Chrysostomou had many bruises and seven of his ribs were broken. His death, he said, was caused by cardiac arrest.
