Biography

Born in the village of Palodia1, Limassol district, on March 29, 1941.

Died on October 5, 1958 in the village of Fasoula2, Limassol district.

Nikos Evagorou attended Palodia primary school and graduated from the Limassol Commercial Academy. He was an active member of the “Hermes” Palodia sports club and the Agia Triada Catechetical Schools of Limassol. When his brother Charalambos moved from their village, Nikos, despite his young age, was only sixteen years old, and took over his brother’s responsible position in EOKA, as leader of the local Palodia group. He reorganized the group, engaged in the construction of bombs, mines and hideouts and carried out attacks against the British.

On May 4, 1958, he was arrested because EOKA letters were found in his possession. He was released after eight days, but he was in hiding. He was sure that by translating the letters, the British would arrest him again, which is why he joined a semi-guerrilla group in his area.

On October 5, 1958, he took part, along with two other guerrillas and the village guard, in an ambush against the British at Lari, near the village of Fasoula, during which they attacked a convoy of military vehicles. During their retreat to their hideout, they were fired upon by soldiers from a passing military vehicle following the convoy. Nikos Evagorou was found, nine days later, at Kastro in Fasoula with the flesh on his hands and face eaten by vultures.

A manuscript of his was found next to him, an excerpt from which includes the following words:

“ I am here, on duty, faithful to the laws of religion and homeland, because the voice of the enslaved Cyprus called me to fight, to fight with her other children for Freedom! Yes, my sweet homeland. "I will fight and die for your freedom. My pen says it, my lips say it, my soul says it"! ”
