Giakoumis Anastasi
Timeline Events
Biography
He was born in the village of Kalogrea, in the province of Kyrenia, currently Turkish-occupied. Possible date is 1903.
He was killed on November 18, 1958 in the village of Charkeia, while plowing his field.
Giakoumis Anastasi studied at the primary school of his village and lived in the Fotis district of the village of Charkeia, where he got married. He was a farmer.
He was one of the pioneers of the Struggle in his area and served as a liaison. He carried mail, pamphlets and armaments. He worked hard and quietly and no one suspected him.
Near his orchard, in the village of Harkeia, in the locality of Fotis, there is a place from which the road to the sea descends and narrows. A steep cliff rises from both the western and eastern sides. From above stretches a plain (isiotopi), the “Moutti of Habina”. In order to transport anything to their camp at Yaila, near Halevka, the English had to pass through there. This location was chosen by EOKA to attack them.
The group that would carry out the attack consisted of three members of EOKA, among whom was Giakoumis Anastasi, who had transported there the pressure mine that was used. After digging a pit in the road where they would place it, the two members hid and waited. Giakoumis was on guard from his orchard and gave the signal when the military cars appeared. The other two planted the mine and moved away. Giakoumis remained there plowing, so to speak, to block the passage over the mine, if a private car happened to appear.
When the mine hit a military car from the passing phalanx, British soldiers poured into the area, saw him working and fired at him unprovoked.
