Biography

He was born in the village of Kissonerga1, in the district of Paphos, on October 26, 1939.

He was killed by the British, after throwing a bomb against them, on March 13, 1956 in his hometown.

Georgios Michael graduated from Kissonerga elementary school and, when he was killed, was a student at the Paphos High School. During the summer holidays he worked in construction work, contributing to his family’s finances, as the eldest son.

With the start of the EOKA struggle, he joined the student groups of his school with the consent of his parents, who supported him in his action, dropping leaflets and raising the Greek flag. Georgios Michael was helping his uncle, who was a youth in the church of his village. From there he procured the flags which he raised in the evenings. The English soldiers, who came to take them down, received the stoning of the children and women who were waiting for them.

He was distinguished for his enthusiasm and spontaneity. With the activity he had developed, Georgios Michael, despite his young age, he was only 16 years old, switched to the attack groups against the soldiers with grenades, with the hero Christos Kkelis in charge.

On March 13, 1956, at ten o’clock in the morning, he lobbed a hand grenade into his village against a military car full of soldiers and drove away. A second army car passing by stopped, and Georgios turned back to see what was going on. He was noticed by the soldiers of the second vehicle, who chased him, opened fire on him and killed him.
