Christodoulos Kannaouros
LimassolBiography
He was born in the village of Kyperounta1, in the province of Limassol, in 1908.
He was killed by British soldiers in his hometown on November 18, 1958.
Christodoulos Kannaouros was a member of the New Guild of Kyperounta and one of the first members of EOKA. His duties in the struggle were to hide weapons, transport correspondence and host partisans and wanted persons, for whose safety he maintained a hideout in his home.
In February 1957, Panagiotis Aristidou, a wanted EOKA guerrilla, was wounded in the battle of Pelendri, during which the heroes Sotiris Tsagkaris and Dimitrios Christodoulou fell and Stylianos Lenas was wounded. Panagiotis Aristidou was able to escape and took refuge in Christodoulou's house, where he hid and was offered appropriate medical care until he recovered.
On November 18, 1958, the Kyperounta liaison was arrested between Amiantos and Kyperounta, along with all the correspondence that came from both the guerrilla group, which was in Amiantos that day, and from other members of the area. Based on the content of the letters, the British authorities carried out arrests and searches in the area.
Georgios Kazanos from Kyperounta, who was expecting to receive the mail, was notified of the events and went to the village of Agridia where he informed the EOKA leader of Kyperounta, who was a teacher assigned to Agridia. Returning to his village at midnight, he went to stay for safety at the house of Christodoulos Kannaouros, where there was a hideout. As soon as he entered and before he could settle into the hideout, the door was knocked on and English soldiers, accompanied by Turkish auxiliaries, shot Christodoulos Kannaouros fatally, freed the entrance, rushed inside and arrested Georgios Kazanos.
According to the official statement, Christodoulos Kannaouros, as soon as he opened the door, attempted to remove the weapon of an English soldier in order to immobilize the others, at which point he was fatally shot.
