Andreas Epifaniou
Timeline Events
Biography
He was born in the village of Pigi, in the province of Famagusta, on December 26, 1938.
He was killed on December 27, 1957 in his village by communists, for his action in EOKA.
Andreas Epifaniou, after graduating from Pigi primary school, worked as a carpenter. He was particularly interested in workers' rights.
With the beginning of the Struggle, he joined the EOKA team of his village and offered his services, with the support and help of his family, in the distribution of leaflets, writing slogans and enlightenment, which took place mainly in the village cafes. His brother Orthodoxos was a member of ANE. (EOKA youth)
Among the other tasks that the organization had assigned to Andreas, was the pronunciation of various slogans. Such slogans were uttered throughout Cyprus, along with the dropping of leaflets, for immediate information and to enliven the people.
This contribution of theirs to the nationalist faction caused anger among members of the left, who persecuted Andreas and his family.
On December 27, 1957, while Andreas Epifaniou was shouting EOKA slogans over the loudspeaker, his voice was recognized and a group of leftists, who were acting under the influence of alcohol (they were drinking in a village tavern at the time), set up a cartel outside his house and they beat him with a knife.
Andreas, cooling off shortly in his mother's arms, managed to name the person who beat him, whom the English government helped to fled to England for reasons of his safety.
Epifaniou was buried with hero honors.
