Petros Vrountos

Petros Vrountos, from Kokkinotrimithia¹ fell for faith and Fatherland on July 24, 1974.

Petros entered the Race early on. He actively participated in EOKA and joined the teams of his region. He showed courage and fighting spirit.

After the race he joined the police force and served mostly in Nicosia, having in his heart the love for Cyprus and the debt to the homeland.

On July 24, 1974 while Petros was the head of the Police station in Kokkinotrimithia, he was sent a message that a Turkish pilot had crashed in Denia² and the Headquarters requested an investigation.

Petros together with a security team got into their car. Indeed, the pilot went down in the area and all the police officers with their guns drawn started looking for him. Soon a shot is heard from a bush where someone was hiding. He was the pilot. The Turk was arrested, but the bullet hit Sergeant Petros Vrountos fatally.

Upon hearing of his death, the village froze. No one expected this evil to happen. Everyone considered Petros invulnerable. He had been through so much and always cheated death.

Petros Vruntos was buried with due honors in the village cemetery.
