Andreas Avraamides

He was born in the village of Tembria, Nicosia province, on August 27, 1938.

He was killed on August 3, 1958 in the location “Mersinia” of Temvria, by the explosion of bombs he was transporting.

Andreas Avraamides studied at Tembria primary school and graduated from Soleas High School. As a student of the Soleas Gymnasium, he took the lead in student events and was arrested by the English authorities for organizing an “illegal parade”. He was sentenced to three months in prison and after his release he continued his activities with greater enthusiasm, developing initiative and taking on additional responsibilities and duties in the Organization (EOKA), including distributing leaflets in the surrounding villages, writing slogans and monitoring agents of the English.

In 1958, when many Turks gathered with the tolerance of the British in Lefka, Digenis gave instructions to the head of the Kakopetrias-Galatas area to prepare to deal with any of their activities. Within these contexts, field-made bombs were prepared, with the aim of reinforcing the EOKA groups in the villages of the sector. These bombs were transported by Andreas Avraamides with his co-combatant Andreas Hellinas. On the way they exploded causing his death.

Andreas Hellinas reports in this regard: “On the night of August 3, 1958, we were transporting 27 bombs from Temvria, specifically from a trench in the location “Mersinia”, when the terrible explosion occurred. At that moment Andreas was holding them. I saw my friend kneeling on the ground, I ran to him and touched him. I spoke to him. He did not reply to me. He was dead. A smile was painted on his face. We were talking and laughing at that time. He died with a smile on his face, and with a smile we sent him to heaven

One monument for the hero was erected at the village’s Primary School and another at the ‘Mersinia’ location
