Christos Kelis

He was born in the village of Kissonerga, in the district of Pafos, on October 17, 1934.

He died on March 7, 1957 between the villages of Talas and Kissonerga, in a battle against British soldiers.

Christos Kelis attended Kissonerga elementary school and worked as an employee in a building materials store in Paphos. He was very courageous and prudent. He joined the fight in 1955 and was a dominant figure in the Paphos district. He took over, as an assistant to the head of the Paphos sector, the guarding of the sector’s armaments, as well as the organization of the groups of all the villages in the low area of the Paphos district, except for Chloraka. At the head of these groups he developed a remarkable activity, such as the collection of weapons and bullets from private individuals in his village, the manufacture of mines and grenades in large quantities and the attacks against the English.

On 17 November 1955 he detonated a military Land Rover with a mine and on 26 November 1955 he dropped the first bomb on his village resulting in the death of the first British soldier in the sector. On November 29, 1955 and January 8, 1956, he led ambushes against the British in Kissonerga. He led a mortar attack against the Ma military camp, between Kissonerga and Pegeia, on December 15, 1956 and on January 20, 1957 he hit the Stroumbiu camp with three mortar shells. He also attacked Colonel McMillan, set up an ambush, and then went on a gunfight against Investigator Windenson. Great were the losses suffered by the English army from the electric bomb-traps which he placed in trees and detonated from some distance, avoiding the risk of his capture.

Christos Kelis, using a time mine, managed to hit the soldiers in the center of the village during their night meeting, forcing them to dissolve the restriction. To avoid arrest he did not sleep at home and often stayed with the rebels in their shelters.

As heroic was his action, so was his death. Four days after the death of Afxentiou, he went to the location of “Api” together with his competitor Miltiadis Stylianos and, following betrayal, they found themselves surrounded by English soldiers who were accompanying them as traitors. The two fighters entered a small room, which housed a water pump, to avoid the fire of the enemies and fought a battle shooting continuously at them. Finally they were hit with grenades which were thrown onto the earthen roof that sheltered their shelter and they fell to the field of honor glorious and immortal.

Several monuments were erected for the hero:
